WHO TOLD YOU THAT WAS YOUR JOB?
When Expectations Become Obligations. Can we talk?
Have you ever looked at your life and realized you've been doing certain things for years, not because you wanted to, but because everybody expected you to?
You became the dependable one. The problem solver. The person who shows up, figures it out, and makes things happen. And because you've done it so well for so long, nobody even thinks to ask if you still want the assignment!
Let's sit with that.
As I've matured, I've started asking myself a different set of questions. Am I doing this because it brings value to my life? Because it aligns with who I am today? Or because I'm afraid of disappointing people who have grown comfortable with my YES? See, expectations have a way of quietly becoming obligations. Before you know it, you're living according to a script somebody else wrote, playing a role you never auditioned for!
And here's where it gets interesting. The people who benefited from the old version of you may not understand the decisions you're making today.
But their comfort cannot continue to be the price of your happiness.
I've learned that changing your mind is not a character flaw. Choosing differently doesn't erase the years you showed up. And saying NO doesn't cancel out every YES you've ever given.
There comes a point in a woman's life when she has to stop asking, "What do they expect from me?" and start asking, "What do I want for the woman I'm becoming?"
You can love people deeply and still make decisions that honor your own life.
So here's my question for you:
What have you always done because it was expected, and what would you choose NOW?
The answer might change more than your schedule. It could change your entire life.
Think well. Live well. Glow well.
